History & Supernatural Qualities
Kyauktan Yele Pagoda, also known as the “Floating Pagoda of Myanmar,” is situated on a small island in the mid-stream of Hmaw Wun Creek. Enshrining sacred Buddha relics, the pagoda is approximately 12 miles south of Thanlyin. It is famous for two supernatural qualities: first, the river water never rises high enough to engulf the pagoda; second, no matter how many pilgrims visit, the pagoda platform never seems crowded and can accommodate everyone at all times.
Architecture & Arts
The pagoda features a golden stupa with an impressive collection of traditional Myanmar artwork, including sculptures, paintings, and multi-tiered golden spires on the rooftop. Within the precincts, visitors can find the statues of Yele Bo Bo Gyi (the guardian spirit), U Shin Gyi (Lord of the Sea), and Sarawati (the Hindu Goddess of Wisdom). The pagoda platform offers a serene 360-degree view of the surrounding waterway and swaying palm trees.
